Aluminum Roofs vs Steel Roofs: Which Metal Roof to Choose?

All metal roofs are not created equal, and certain key differences can have a direct impact on their longevity. Unfortunately,  the metal roof you find in Tampa isn't built to withstand the elements. They are too thin, poorly painted, and lack proper fasteners. To make matters worse, they may have cheap underlayment and insulation. The reality is that a metal roof is very energy efficient and has many benefits that greatly enhance a home's value. However, if you had some information on the following issues before you purchased your metal roofing system, it could have saved you some money:
  • What types of metal roofing exist?
  • How do I choose the best one for my area?
  • What questions should I ask my contractor to ensure that I get a quality roof?
This blog will go over the different types of metal roofing materials available, then help you identify which type would be best for your home. Finally, we'll review essential factors to consider when selecting a contractor. To find out about these things and more, read on...

Choosing the Right Material for Your Home

Many homes have asphalt shingle roofing. Asphalt roofing has been in use for many decades, yet the materials used are relatively thin. Moreover, they don't protect well against wind uplift, and the roofs themselves typically do not last that long before needing to be replaced.  One alternative to this is metal roofing (also known as a standing seam) - which can increase your home's value while also providing it with an attractive, lasting appearance. However, one should understand that all metal roofs are not created equal. There are significant differences between different systems that make one far more suitable for Tampa than another.

Steel vs Aluminum

The two most common types of metal roofing available today are steel and aluminum. Steel is typically painted, while aluminum tends to be silver and requires no painting or finishing. Steel roofs:  Durable with paint - Steel roofs can last up to 40 years in most cases. However, the paint may wear off after 10-15 years if these areas aren't masked adequately during installation. Some paints even contain soft metals like zinc which form a protective layer over time. In addition, these paints tend to chip less than standard latex paints & coatings (but again, not completely). Non-combustible & long-lasting - Steel is non-combustible (won't burn). The metal has a high melting point making it an excellent material for roofing in extreme weather like hurricanes, tornadoes, etc. Great heat conductor - This means that your home will be more relaxed in the summer months. This makes them especially great for Florida's climate since they help keep homes cool. However, they can also cause problems during the winter if they're not adequately insulated.
Aluminum Roofs:
Non-combustible & long-lasting - Aluminum is non-combustible (won't burn). The metal has a high melting point making it an excellent material for roofing in extreme weather conditions like hurricanes, wind storms, etc. Affordable- Aluminum is a lighter & thinner material than steel, so that means you can get more square feet of coverage for the same amount of money.  Non-conductive & excels against wind uplift - Aluminum doesn't conduct heat (like steel does). Thermal issues aren't generally a problem with this type of roof, while wind uplift resistance is still excellent.  The climate of Florida is different; so are the needs of every home. That means it's impossible to say with 100% certainty which metal roof is suitable for your home. However, metal roofs are an excellent choice for homeowners in Tampa, FL.
